From the author of Arriving Through Time:
Lizzie Alexander is your average sixteen-year-old high school student living in Jacksonville, Florida. But Lizzie’s life is about to get a lot more complicated as she and her friends stumble upon something that pushes them to the brink...and through time.
How do we become the person that we are meant to be? Is it just destiny or do the choices we make determine who we become in the future? What if you could change the past? Would you risk changing your future, too, or would you even want to?
Will Lizzie and her friends survive the past and find out the truth before time runs out?
First Impressions: Arriving Through Time was a pleasure! Experiencing the story through Lizzie’s perspective helped me care about what was going to happen to her. She sounded like a real person, and I respected her for standing up for herself! Her friendship with Jeremy and Sam was sweet. I liked the light-hearted atmosphere of the story, even though it certainly had some dark moments. The rapid pace kept me turning the pages, and the momentum never let up. Although the concept of going back in time and experiencing historical events has been explored many times before, the cast of characters kept the story exciting!
Cover and Setting: The blue color on the cover made me curious because it looks so unnatural! It portrays the one scene in the story that was difficult for me to visualize, so I appreciated being able to see how that particular setting was supposed to look. This story jumps to so many different places, all of them memorable. It was fun to try to guess where the characters were in each chapter.
Plot: The plot was surprisingly complex, involving themes such as family, friendship, and self-discovery. I won’t say too much about it because I don’t want to spoil the story, but I appreciated how all the different pieces were woven together by the conclusion. Also, there were many unexpected twists and turns along the way. In Arriving Through Time, nothing should be taken for granted!
Characters: Lizzie was a great character. She was both vulnerable and courageous, and her backstory gave her depth. I liked how she depended on her friends and how she was willing to change her mind about things when she got new information. Other than Lizzie, my favorite characters were Gary and Tiffany, even though they certainly weren’t Lizzie’s closest friends! I thought they were funny, but most importantly, they ended up not being nearly as stereotypical as I expected. To me, they were the most interesting characters in the story, and it was fascinating to see how they changed. I enjoyed that Lizzie and her companions struggled to make sense of what was happening during the story, instead of merely accepting it without any questions.
Final Thoughts: Arriving Through Time was a very enjoyable book. At times, it was more gruesome than I expected, but not in a way that was too disturbing. Lizzie and the others were fun characters who seemed real without getting bogged down in angst and drama. Arriving Through Time is the sort of story I would like to read on a rainy day when I need something to cheer me up. I hope there will be a sequel. I would love to experience more of Lizzie’s adventures!
